Products: Low VOC Resins and Gel Coats
Interplastic is committed to developing products and resin systems that help its customers meet current MACT and EPA requirements. We have a solid line of low VOC resins and gel coats that meet current regulatory standards without compromising performance.
Resins
We have a wide variety of products with a VOC content of less than 38.4%, and some products that contain less than 30% HAP. They are used in applications such as marine, structural, and corrosion applications, using production techniques such as filament winding, flow coating, hand lay-up/spray-up and pultrusion. We also have low VOC modified vinyl ester resins.
The CoREZYN® CORVE8121LH Series of low HAP (less than 35%) vinyl ester resins meet or exceed all U.S. standards for blister and fatigue resistance while meeting the current EPA and MACT Marine and Fiberglass Product standards. This series of vinyl ester resins are also approved by Lloyd’s of London for marine craft application.
These low HAP, 100% vinyl ester resins are promoted, thixotropic and feature excellent physical properties. They also have rapid Barcol development, which is very convenient for the spray-up and hand lay-up techniques used in marine, pool and spa manufacturing. Peak exotherm can be reached in as little as 15 minutes; gel times for the series range from 15 to 40 minutes.
These resins contain a maximum of 35% styrene (HAP) by weight. That level meets the EPA 40 CFR Part 63 requirements of the National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAP) for Boat Manufacturing. This product line also meets the current Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) requirements of California's Southern California's South Coast Air Quality Management District's (SCAQMD) Rule 1162 for "High Strength Resin".
As a marine, pool or spa manufacturer, this resin series is a welcome tool in the struggle to meet environmental regulations while retaining the integrity of the laminate's strength and durability.
Interplastic was also the first to develop a tough, low VOC, modified vinyl ester resin (MVR). The CoREZYN VEX201-307 resin is designed for marine, tooling and general composite applications. It features excellent physical characteristics, surface quality, and blister resistance. It gives you the toughness and strength of traditional vinyl esters plus compliance with current EPA regulations.
The CoREZYN COR63-AA-350 orthophthalic polyester resins are pre-promoted, thixotropic, MACT- and SCAQMD-compliant for laminating applications.
Gel Coats
Our new low VOC gel coats deliver outstanding product performance and compliance with the SCAQMD's Rule 1162 and ANSI Z-124.3 sanitary ware tests. The pigmented L Series low VOC gel coats have a 25 - 33% decrease in styrene levels over typical pigmented gel coats and have a weight loss below 60 grams per square meter. This satisfies two points of compliance with SCAQMD's Rule 1162 when only one is required. The L Series is available in a full array of colors for a wide variety of products and are Canadian Standards Association-approved.
The Silmar® low HAP clear gel coats are gaining wide market acceptance.
The SIL08LH-70 andSIL08LH-70/S have a maximum of 42% styrene. This results in a 10 – 15% total HAP reduction over previous formulas and enables the user to meet the reduced emissions mandated by the EPA MACT standard. When used with a high quality matrix resin, such as Silmar marble resins, these clear gel coats easily surpass ANSI Z124.3 thermal shock test criteria. They exhibit excellent color and improved resistance to "yellowing in the box". They also create less gel coat over-spray, which reduces production costs.
